When Babysitting Became Bible Study
What my grandson Ezra taught me about the Garden of Eden, human desire, and the Bread of Life. I am babysitting my grandson today. I notice something fascinating. Everything new that my Ezra takes in his hand, he takes it to his mouth to taste. The very instinct is to eat. Eating was the first lesson God gives to His first child, Adam. My grandson is discovering the world through his mouth . He sees something new, reaches for it, takes hold of it, and almost instinctively brings it to his mouth. Before he can reason about what something is, there is this desire to taste and take in . That reminded me of the very first narrative in the Torah and makes Genesis 2–3 even more striking. 🌿 The first command concerning the garden was connected with eating God gave Adam an abundance: Genesis 2:16 “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat” Notice the generosity of God comes before the prohibition.
